Gulf of Thailand
This specific locale of the
South China Sea plays host to an equally impressive selection of corals
and marine life to those found beneath the Andaman Sea.
A wealth of invertebrates and reef fishes flamboyantly punctuate rocky
structures and coral reefs around several island destinations.
|
Andaman sea
Myriads of reef inhabitants
and pelagic visitors abound in this part of the Indo-Pacific region.
Each specific location is individually showcased highlighting particular
points of interest and outstanding beauty in both words and pictures.
|
The Surin Islands
Marine National Park & Richelieu Rock
The fringing reefs of the
two Surin islands are the most extensively developed coral structures
in the country.
Richelieu Rock is noted for not only its rich diversity of reef
inhabitants but also a wealth and high density of visiting pelagics.
Whale shark encounters at Richelieu Rock are so frequent, they are
almost guaranteed.
|
The Similan Islands
Marine National Park
A stunning group of nine granitic islands form the nucleus of this,
one of Asia's top diving destinations. These islands share similar
characteristics both above and below the water; the east features
long sandy beaches and splendid fringing reefs whereas the west
has a more rugged coastline, underlined by a jumble of intriguing
rocks and boulders.
|
Phi Phi Islands & Shark Point
This was the country's initial
diving destination and is now well established.
On offer are a multitude of caves, hard and soft coral reefs and
Thailand newest diving attraction, the King Cruiser wreck which
sank only a year ago; already the transformation into an artificial
reef is well underway.
|
Mergui Archipelago & Burma Banks
The regions newest and most
exciting diving destination comprises of over eight hundred islands
and submerged sea mounds. Exploration here remains in its infancy
but experiences so far have been more than overwhelming.
|
Losin
Due to its position this remote
site experiences ideal conditions for promoting coral growth, which
is exactly what has happened here.
Fine gardens and tables have flourished and are prime examples of
those found in the Gulf.
|
Hin Daeng & Hin Muang
These two undersea mountains
(Red and Purple Rock) received their names from the hues of red
corals and purple sea anemones that adorn their rocky faces.
The two open ocean sites act as natural magnets to an expanse of
pelagic fishes as they are attracted into the area by a variety
of reef inhabitants.
|
Chumporn & Tao Island
Chumporn is renowned for it's
high representation and variety of species of black corals and associated
marine life.
Due to it's remote location, the island of Koh Tao experiences some
of the clearest waters and preferable diving conditions in the Gulf
of Thailand; perfect in fact, for being amongst the numerous pelagic
visitors drawn in to feed.
