Excellent Dictionary, April 21, 2000
Reviewer: A reader from New Zealand

But it is essential for the serious student to have both McFarland and Haas. One is not enough, even when backed up by the large Thai-Thai dictionaries. It is also worth remembering that these two excellent dictionaries are now quite old - don't expect modern technical vocabulary.

Very good dictionary, only M. R. Haas' has made a better one, January 13, 1999
Reviewer: A reader from Vasteras, Sweden.

It's next to Thai-English Student's Dictionary by Mary R Haas the second best dictionary and I recommend all who are really serious to learn Thai to buy it (if you already have bought M. R. Haas'). It has more explanation than Haas' and many words that Haas' don't have. I strongly disliked the very complicated method to do transcription of Thai and to show the tones of the words by McFarland.

A nice, simple phrasebook..., June 25, 2000
Reviewer: A reader from USA

After reading through this phrasebook, I've but two main observations. First is the positive. The tone markers are incredibly easy to understand, in fact, it is the best system I've seen so far. My only complaint is that there is absolutely no Thai script in the book at all. So if you are having trouble pronouncing the word, your Thai friend/companion/etc. cannot simply read the Thai script and help you out. Other than that this is a nice phrasebook which has come in handy when I've used it in conjunction with other Thai language-learning materials.

the talented Mr. Higbie, January 11, 2000
Reviewer: Zoe Allen from Washington, DC

We travelled to Thailand over the summer and found the phrasebook easy to use and very helpful- it's a must if you're headed there, for getting around, ordering food, discovering places off the beaten track, and getting to know local people. Don't leave home without it.

a very good phrasebook/dictionary
I think this is the best of the small Thai dictionary/phrasebooks. The tone markers are very easy to read and the selection of words and phrases is useful. I've studied Thai for over a year and have been to Thailand and found the book extremely useful for communication with Thais.

The Oxford-Duden Pictorial Thai & English Dictionary

Great reference for technical translation, April 12, 2000 5 stars Thai & English dictionary book
Reviewer: jeffrey l guthery (see more about me) from Seoul, Korea

I have Oxford-Duden pictorial dictionaries in both Chinese and Thai, and have found them very helpful reference materials indeed for situations where translation of esoteric or extremely technical items is required, such as working parts of machinery, military hardware, etc. Obviously, being a pictorial dictionary, abstract nouns as well as verbs are not listed. I should also say that this dictionary would more than likely be superfluous for a basic-level speaker. I think it would probably be quicker to look up a word such as "sparrow" in a standard Eng-Thai dictionary than to track down the same word using this one. However, it is a fantastic technical reference.

Must have as a supplement to Thai language material, January 15, 1999
Reviewer: A reader from Virginia, USA

"A picture says a thousand words". . . This book has thousands of pictures! This book is a handy reference for English people who are studying the Thai language or vice versa.
I believe it is a bit unwieldy for the casual traveller/visitor.
I have a strong desire to learn Thai and I have purchased quite a bit of English<->Thai material over the years...most of the material is 1970s and earlier. . .
This "dictionary" (manual?) is recent and has really tickled my fancy. I will buy this book for some of my Thai & English friends...Two thumbs up!

not for the beginner
The book is in the now traditional style of the Oxford Duden series of dictionaries, including the very small print size. Its divisions into subject area rather than by the word that you wish to translate makes it as easy (or difficult) as using a normal yellow pages. Its including of Thai script is only of use for the more experienced Thai speaker due partly to the small print size used. A very comprehensive guide for the technical or engineering user but NOT a book suitable for anyone new to the language / script.
